CIVIL UNREST ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES

As institutions of education over ignorance primarily comprised of young voices, universities are generally progressive, which is especially evident during the present time of civil unrest surrounding racial injustice. Students’ campuses reflect their beliefs through their public art and graffiti.

These vocal, visual and public artists are key proponents of change; they are not virtue signalers creating art with the intention of recognition, as all artists featured are anonymous. Rather, they create solely with the purpose of bringing attention to racial injustice.

Many students have been disconnected from the progressive environments and cultures of their universities as they return home because of the current COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, fewer people are exposed to this reactive art.

ABOUT

This project is grounded in the more abstract concept of student response to racial injustice through art. The art often showcases explicit language and in one case, an explicit image which conveys the extent of the outrage over a human rights issue. I hope to remind my peers who may be feeling detached from their communities that they will be there for them when they return to campus.
